The Yamaha STAGEPAS 600BT is one of the most impressive portable PA systems we’ve had the pleasure of testing. It offers much to a wide range of performers, so without further ado, let’s showcase how this excellent unit performed.
Sound Quality
One of the first elements we investigate when we review a system is the quality of the sound reproduction. We have extensive experience with Yamaha products, so expectations were high, but as expected, the Yamaha STAGEPAS 600BT breezed through our tests.
Balance across all frequencies is superb, with high precision yet enough warmth and character to ensure the unit doesn’t sound lifeless and bland. The projection was also even without any apparent issues in the range.
The lows offer solid punch thanks to the 10-inch woofer. While it is far from earth-shattering, it is enough to handle small to medium-sized gigs. Deep and full without muddiness in this critical range.
The STAGEPAS 600BT is a versatile offering from one of the leading audio gear manufacturers.
The mids are equally impressive, with excellent character and vibrancy that helps elevate vocals and instruments alike. A seamless transition from the lows ensures a well-rounded sound without any glaring balance issues.
Yamaha excels at providing clarity across its lineup of speakers, and the STAGEPAS 600BT is no exception. Clear and defined without any tonality that would cause fatigue over longer performances.
For those seeking an excellent sounding system in this style of portable PA, you can’t go wrong with the Yamaha STAGEPAS 600BT. We tested the unit in various gig locations that we have access to, and it went from strength to strength.
I’ll admit that for larger gigs, you’ll need to look elsewhere. But for smaller venues and some medium-sized gigs, the Yamaha STAGEPAS 600BT is an ideal choice that will serve you exceptionally well.
Build Quality
While Yamaha has an excellent reputation for sound quality, it is equally known for delivering in the build quality department. A premium brand that focuses on ensuring your gear lasts for years.
The rugged cabinet is a standout. Durable and thick plastic ensures that the unit can handle the rigors of frequent transportation, and it’s relatively scuff-resistant.
Superb quality from a leading manufacturer.
The component quality is also high, with an excellent 10-inch woofer per speaker and a 1.4-inch voice coil compression river. The high quality extends to the comprehensive 10-channel mixer.
Each knob and connection point is secure and reliable. The assorted buttons for various features also live up to the high standards I expect from a robust portable PA system.
Specifications
The Yamaha STAGEPAS 600BT features a powered mixer with two passive speakers. Each speaker offers 10-inch low-frequency and 1.4-inch voice coil compression drivers.
As for raw power, the STAEPAS 600BT packs a sizeable punch with 680 Watts of Dynamic power and 560 Watts of Continuous power. The result is an impressive 129dB Max SPL.
Loud output with excellent tonal range.
This high range highlights the unit’s capacity to handle small to medium-sized gigs comfortably. The unit performed well at higher levels without any noticeable distortion in our testing.
The frequency response is also broad at 55Hz-20kHz (-10dB). Enough depth to provide satisfying low-frequency output and appropriate reach in the top end to cover the audible spectrum.
Tuning
Flexibility is critical in a portable PA system. It is one of the primary testing factors we consider when evaluating a unit.
While there is nothing wrong with specialized gear, I prefer a system that adapts quickly to different scenarios.
The Yamaha STAGEPAS 600BT gives you access to a comprehensive range of tuning controls to ensure you can sculpt the sound to your preference and handle any gig situation.
Ample granular control to adjust the output.
Across all ten channels, you’ll have access to a 3-band EQ with a range of -15 to +15, along with a dedicated Level dial for each channel. A Master Level button and three primary EQ modes are also available: Speech, Music, and Bass Boost.
The first four channels offer Reverb with Yamaha’s famous high-resolution SPX digital reverbs. Hall, Plate, Room, and Echo provide ample flexibility with added Parameter controls.
Easy access to a Feedback Suppressor is also available to ensure problematic frequencies don’t make their way into your output.
Design
The Yamaha STAGEPAS 600BT also scores high marks in the design area. When assessing portable PA systems, we consider two primary factors when marking this category: appearance and functional design. In both regions, the Yamaha STAGEPASS 600BT has a lot to offer.
The all-black cabinet design is attractive and professional. The large waveguide dominates the top half, while the bottom features a rigid grille to protect the woofer. Complementing this is the iconic Yamaha logo. Clean, neat design that will not look out of place in a professional setting.
Easy clip-in mixer and convenient storage section for cables.
The mixer also offers excellent design with clear delineation between the channels, connections, and various features. The mixer also cleanly clips into the rear of one of the speakers.
The other speaker also features a removable cover. Behind the cover is an open space to store cables for seamless transportation. The angular design also allows the system to be used in a monitor position.
The only design aspect that might prove troublesome for some is the internal cooling fan that keeps the unit from overheating. This fan is louder than I would like. It is unnoticeable when playing at higher volume levels, but it’s a little distracting on lower levels.
The STAGEPAS 660BT also features a pole mount connection for easy integration with standard pole stands.
Dimensions
For a portable PA system, the Yamaha STAGEPASS 600BT features many things we look for in a system. The overall weight is manageable at a combined weight of 56.4 lbs. (25.6 kg). The spread is 24.03 lbs (21.8 kg) for the two speakers and 8.37 lbs. (3.8 kg) for the mixer.
Excellent balance between quality, weight, and size.
It isn’t the lightest unit on the market, but it is also far from cumbersome. The only addition that would raise the portability aspect would be a suitcase design that many other portable PA systems employ. But even with the lack of this convenience, the STAGEPAS 600BT is still a highly mobile unit.
Connections
One of the most impressive features of the Yamaha STAGEPAS 600BT is the extensive range of connection options on offer.
Channel One and Two feature XLR connection points with a Mic/Line button and the option to switch on Phantom Power. This ensures you’ll be able to use a wide variety of microphones.
Channel Three features a combo XLR/TRS jack and a Mic/Line button. At the same time, Channel Four replicates this configuration but adds the option of a Hi-Z button.
An extensive range of connection options.
Channel Five/Six features a dual TRS Line connection with the choice of Stereo and Mono. Channel Seven/Eight is much the same but offers a dual RCA Stereo connection choice.
Channel Nine/Ten offers a dual TRS Line connection and a 1/8-inch connection for added versatility to connect external devices like smartphones. This channel is also the Bluetooth connection point.
Pairing is seamless, and the range of 10 meters is adequate but certainly not as extensive as some may desire. Bluetooth version 4.1, A2DP v1.2 might not be the most up-to-date Bluetooth version, but for most applicable scenarios, it is sufficient.
A Left/Right TRS Monitor Out, and a Mono Subwoofer Out, wrap up the connection options. A Reverb Footswitch point is another added benefit and ideal for gigs that alternate between singing and speech, like weddings.
Value
There is a lot to consider when evaluating the value proposition of the Yamaha STAGEPAS 600BT. In some regards, this portable PA system is an excellent value buy. At this price, you’ll have access to a comprehensive mixer, superb sound, and high portability, making it an enticing choice.
However, it’s also not the cheapest unit in this PA system style. Other choices are worth considering if you are looking for something more affordable. Plus, depending on how vital Bass output is to your gigs, you might need to factor a subwoofer into your value calculations.
Looking at the unit in the context of what it delivers, it’s hard to fault. This is a well-rounded and versatile system from one of the leading audio brands in the world. A high-quality unit that will serve you well for years.
Customer Reviews
The Yamaha STAGEPASS 600BT is a popular unit. I’ve assessed reviews from multiple areas, and they consistently score 4 or 5 stars. Another thing I noticed across the reviews is just how broad the application potential of the STAGEPAS 600BT is. Everything from duos, bands, DJs, karaoke, and beyond.
Tips For Balancing Vocals And Instruments
Getting the balance right for your performance is one of the most crucial parts of a successful performance. Below, I uncover a few tips to help you maximize the balance between instruments and vocals.
Microphone Placement: Position the microphone close to the vocalist’s mouth to ensure a solid and clear vocal signal. Experiment with different angles and distances to find the sweet spot that minimizes feedback and maximizes clarity.
A comprehensive mixer is essential for balancing vocals and instruments.
Adjust EQ Settings: Use the PA system’s EQ to balance the frequencies of vocals and instruments. Cut any frequencies that clash or muddy the mix and boost others to enhance clarity and presence. Pay attention to the mid-range frequencies, where vocals typically sit.
Balance Volume Levels: Adjust the volume levels of vocals and instruments to ensure they are audible without overpowering each other. Start by setting a comfortable level for the vocals and then adjust the instrument levels accordingly. Constantly monitor the mix during the performance and make minor adjustments as needed.
Plenty more tips are available online if you want to take it further. But if you keep the above three primary tips in mind, you’ll be well on your way to an excellent-sounding performance that is sure to impress.
Alternatives
I’ve heaped a bunch of praise on the Yamaha STAGEPAS 600BT in this review, but I’m also acutely aware that it might not be the right choice for everyone. Below, I take a quick peek at other options that might better meet your needs.
JBL EON208P
If you are looking for something a little cheaper, the JBL EON208P should be on your radar: excellent sound, multiple channels, and a convenient suitcase-style design.
- Well-balanced sound that is engaging and clear.
- Simple to transport and much lighter than the STAGEPAS 600BT.
- It is not as loud, and the bass is not as rich.
Bose S1 Pro Plus
Not everyone needs a bazillion channels, nor do they need a full two-speaker setup. If you fall into this group, the Bose S1 Pro+ is a superb offering with a lot going for it.
- Fantastic sound quality and ToneMatch feature for balancing instruments and vocals.
- Complete cable-free portability thanks to a built-in battery.
- It is only appropriate for smaller gigs.
JBL PRX ONE
The final option I want to highlight is an entirely different offering than the STAGEPAS 600BT. Column PA systems are an excellent alternative that offers loud output while retaining portability.
- Punchy sound, wide dispersion, and detailed tuning flexibility.
- Deeper bass and attractive styling.
- It is substantially more expensive than the STAGEPAS 600BT.
Our Verdict
I’ve seen a lot in my over 15 years in the industry. Especially when it comes to portable PA systems, as the years go by, they are increasingly more versatile, easier to transport, and provide superb sound for small to medium-sized gigs.
