The Electro-Voice ETX-15SP packs a mighty punch with an efficient Class D amp. While it might not compare to its bigger sibling, it is still an exceptional choice for smaller gigs, and a number of these can also put in a decent showing for medium-sized events.
Features
The EV ETX-15SP is a capable and punchy subwoofer with all the modern bells and whistles you would expect from a comprehensive PA subwoofer. Let’s dive into the details of what this 15-inch subwoofer has to offer.
Sound Quality
One of the things that I like most about the entire Electro-Voice lineup of products is the excellent sound quality their products offer. Whether that is within their loudspeaker lineup or subwoofers, you can always expect clean and satisfying sound.
The 15-inch ETX-15SP maintains this tradition with exceptionally dynamic and precise bass delivery. There is ample punch on offer and enough warmth to give the unit a satisfying response.
The 15-inch woofer handles bass well.
Tonality is precise, and the subtle nuances of lower frequencies are well represented. There is no muddiness or sloppiness in the low end. As a 15-inch subwoofer, it doesn’t quite have that earth-shattering rumble that some might desire, but compared to other 15-inch offerings, this one stands out.
The extension is nice and low at 32Hz at -10dB. This is better than even some of the 18-inch offerings within Electro-Voice’s more budget-focused offerings.
The built-in protections do hold the unit back ever so slightly, but I didn’t find the limiter as aggressive as on some of the other EV subwoofers I’ve tested.
“Outstanding bass tonality with ample punch.”
As a solo PA subwoofer, the ETX-15SP can easily handle smaller gigs, and a pair of these will provide ample coverage for spaces that accommodate around 50-80 people. If you add a few more to your arsenal, I can foresee this 15-inch woofer handling gigs of up to 100 people comfortably.
The ETX-15SP is impressive, and its position at the top of Electro-Voice PA offerings is justified. Smooth, clear, and punchy bass response that is highly likely to put a smile on your face.
Build Quality
Electro-Voice doesn’t pull any punch in this area. This is one of the most reliable and well-built PA subwoofers on the market. It’s another hallmark of Electro-Voice products and something that consistently ensures it scores high marks in my testing.
The cabinet is ultra tough and features 13-ply 18mm Birch plywood for a solid and dependable feel that is unmatched. The cabinet features EV’s trademark EV coat, which is durable and scratch-resistant.
The front grille is another highlight and is the same as is present across the entire EV lineup. It’s tough 18 AWG steel and ding resistant. It combines with the thick cabinet to create a complete and highly durable package.
Premium quality components and a tough box.
The DSP unit at the subwoofer’s rear is also high-quality, with a bright and responsive screen complimented by secure connection points and a satisfying control dial for easy navigation through the menu.
The in-built handles are also exceptional and perfectly integrated into the cabinet. Rounding it off is the high-quality caster wheels. The wheels glide well and ensure transportation is a little easier.
As always, EV does not disappoint, and it’s the reason why I am always happy to recommend their products. But for added peace of mind, I suggest picking up a cover and that you buy from a reputable dealer in the unlikely event you might need after-sales support.
Specifications
The ETX series from Electro-Voice features an 1800 W power configuration. Within the ETX-15SP is a 15-inch DVX 3159A subwoofer that can punch out some generously rich and dynamic bass.
The frequency response is also impressive, with a reach of 32Hz-180Hz at -10dB and 37Hz-150Hz at -3dB. The other notable specification is the maximum SPL of 134dB at peak.
Lots of power and impressive volume levels.
Even with a drop of 10dB, you’ll still have a sizable amount of headroom up your sleeve. But as previously mentioned, this subwoofer is best suited to smaller events, especially if you run it as a solo sub with a pair of tops.
Ideally, I recommend opting for a pair of these if you want maximum depth and delivery, and a complement of four will ensure optimal performance in slightly larger spaces.
As with all ETX subwoofers, you can choose between four crossover frequency points – 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, and 150Hz. Good flexibility to adjust to a variety of tops and configurations.
Tuning Options
The ETX series features Electro-Voice’s impressive DSP control unit, granting you access to a broad selection of features. This push into the modern era ensures maximum flexibility when setting up for a gig.
The vibrant screen makes navigating the menu intuitive, and the control dial is equally responsive without any lag between movements.
Bright LCD screen and simple navigation.
Within the menu, you can access some core features to fine-tune the output to your needs. The MODE preset is by far the most impactful, with a choice between Music, Live, and Club.
These modes are self-explanatory, with Music serving as the default catch-all choice, while Live is ideal for bands, and Club delivers some extra low-end thump at the expense of finesse.
While all three are appropriate, I do recommend testing them all out. In particular, the Live setting adds some extra volume to the mix, which might be applicable even if you are a DJ or playing back pre-recorded music.
“Easy to use and effective DSP controls give you full control.”
Next is a LOCATION menu, which features the option to switch the unit to Cardioid mode. This allows you to reduce stage output by up to 35dB when used in tandem with another EV subwoofer.
You’ll also have access to a LOW PASS menu for selecting crossover points, and further menu choices that impact elements like screen brightness and contrast and front LED light control.
Adaptability is the name of the game for modern performers, and the ETX-15SP gives you all the tools you’ll need to adapt to various situations.
Design
Another feature of the ETX series and all Electro-Voice products is the slick and modern styling. This is an attractive subwoofer, well, as attractive as a subwoofer can get.
The sharp lines and angular front grille give the unit a blend of industrial and futuristic vibes that will comfortably become a part of a variety of settings. Playing a corporate event? The ETX series will look professional. Grinding it out at an underground rave? Once again, the ETX will blend seamlessly.
The ETX-15SP is Cardioid ready.
Beyond aesthetic design, the ETX-15SP also features some technical design elements that you would expect from a top-tier piece of kit.
You’ll have access to two carry handles, a dedicated pole mount point, and grooves on the top for easy subwoofer stacking. Completing the functionality is the casters for more ergonomic transport. But it is worth noting there are no flypoints for suspended installation.
Dimensions
I’ll get this out of the way straight away. This is a heavy subwoofer that can be cumbersome to move about. Yes, the addition of the casters makes it easy to roll it around into position, but you’ll still need to lift this unit at times, and at 92 lbs. (41.7 kg), that is no small task.
The ETX-15SP is a large and heavy subwoofer.
As for dimensions, it falls within the range that I expect from a 15-inch subwoofer. It’s a reasonably sizeable box, but when dealing with a 15-inch cone, you can do only so much. Overall, if you can look past the heftiness and have someone to assist you with setup, the ETX-15SP is reasonable.
Connection Options
As with most modern subwoofers, the connection points remain straightforward. At the unit’s rear, you’ll have access to a combo XLR/TRS jack for Input 1 and 2, along with XLR outputs for chaining multiple units.
Basic connections for simple setup.
Every connection point, including the power connection, is firm and secure, so there are no issues. As always, I urge you to invest in quality cables. This is something often overlooked when people go gear shopping.
Value
The ETX series sits at the top of the mountain in the Electro-Voice lineup and with a price that matches its status. So, while it might not be the cheapest, it does balance performance and quality exceptionally well.
If you are a beginner, it can be daunting to fork out this much money, but if you can afford it, you’ll rapidly realize this is an investment in high-quality gear built to last.
“Premium quality subwoofer with a top-shelf price point.”
The value offering will be dependent on where you are at. If you are an existing performer looking for an upgrade or addition, the ETX is a wise choice. But if you are a beginner, you could opt for Electro-Voice’s more budget-friendly offerings before exploring the premium ETX series.
Customer Reviews
The ETX series and the ETX-15SP, in particular, is a popular choice with multiple high-scoring reviews. The vast majority point to the punchy and satisfying response and the easy-to-use interface. Critics also give the ETX series high marks.
Be Ready To Adapt
Adding a subwoofer to your setup can drastically increase the sound quality of your performances. Richer low-end and less strain on your tops can only lead to bigger and better things.
In most cases, placement won’t matter too much if you have a solo sub. But it is still worth exploring different positions in each venue you play at to attain maximum performance. Each gig is different, and you should be ready to adapt to each space.
You need to be flexible and ready to adapt to different venues.
Once you start adding multiple subwoofers, it can get trickier, and you’ll need to be prepared to adapt even more and adjust more settings, like time delay.
Generally speaking, most people’s instinct is to add a subwoofer to each end of the stage, but this can result in power alleys and null points. You’ll be better off placing them front and center and then adjusting spacing for optimal results.
In either case, the key to achieving optimum sound is to experiment with placement and be ready to adapt to each venue. This will mean a solid selection of cables and enough time for setup. As the old saying goes, “Proper preparation prevents poor performance.”
Alternatives
I’ll be the first to admit that shopping around for a PA subwoofer can be challenging. There are a wide array of options out there with varying degrees of power and quality. Below, I explore a few alternatives to the ETX-15SP that might suit your needs.
EV ELX200-12SP Review
If you mainly play small gigs, the EV ELX200-12SP is worth exploring. This subwoofer sounds good but also features a smaller profile and substantially lighter box for easier transportation.
- Impressive bass tonality for a 12-inch subwoofer.
- More affordable choice compared to the ETX-15SP.
- Doesn’t punch as hard or as loud as the ETX-15SP.
JBL PRX915XLF Review
Next up is the JBL PRX915XLF. This 15-inch subwoofer packs plenty of power and has some ultra-handy features that will appeal to people who love to tweak sound output.
- Generous bass that is rich in tonality and warmth.
- Extensive tuning options and connectivity with the JBL Pro Connect App.
- The ETX-15SP offers better bass definition.
PreSonus ULT18 Review
The final option I want to highlight is the impressive ULT18 from PreSonus. It offers excellent reach with a satisfying rumble thanks to the larger 18-inch woofer and high power output.
- Punchy and loud without muddiness.
- Modern design and high build quality.
- Doesn’t feature an onboard LCD screen.
Should You Buy?
Simply put, you can’t go wrong with the ETX series from Electro-Voice. This series features exceptional build quality, easy-to-use features, and satisfying sound.
I’ll admit I like the larger 18-inch model a little more. Still, I also appreciate that it is more expensive and potentially overkill for some situations. The ETX-15SP is a perfect addition to a set of high-quality tops to round out your lower end—another superb subwoofer from a company that has rapidly become one of my favorites.
