Neumann TLM 103 Review

The legendary U87 from Neumann is a staple in many professional studios worldwide. Still, its high price tag is a difficult barrier to overcome. This is where the TLM 103 comes into the picture as a more reasonably priced alternative. While it may not have all the features of the U87, it offers a similar sound quality and build, making it a worthy contender for those on a budget.

The Neumann TLM 103 is a highly capable contemporary studio microphone with a unique character that will appeal to many people. This character is defined by its slightly bright sound signature. However, as we’ll detail in this review, this distinctive character isn’t for everyone.

Features

The Neumann TLM 103 aims to marry the technical excellence of Neumann microphones with the distinguishing features of one of its leading options. It does an admirable job of achieving this difficult task, which I initially thought would be too challenging for Neumann to pull off.

Sound Quality

The Neumann TLM 103 is not just a one-trick pony. It ticks several of the boxes we assess when exploring the capabilities of a studio microphone. It’s surprisingly versatile, delivering solid performance across a broad range of applications. This versatility ensures that it’s a reliable tool in any audio professional’s arsenal.

As a large condenser microphone with a cardioid pattern, we started with various vocal tests. The TLM 103 offered excellent voice-over recording capabilities in a well-treated studio space. The profile is natural and authentic but not hyper-accurate. For our tastes, the TLM 103 adds just enough character and warmth to give it an excellent presence.

Neumann TLM 103 Sound Profile.

A versatile studio microphone.

Moving onto vocals highlighted one of our only minor gripes with the microphone. It can be bright with certain vocal styles. More nasally vocals are slightly fatiguing and will require more post-processing work than some might want. But this is heavily dependent on the vocalist. For deeper voices, it’s a solid workhorse.

The Neumann TLM 103 shone in our instrument testing, with excellent recording capabilities across a wide range of instrument types, from strings to woodwinds and beyond. Acoustic guitar again showed some weakness due to the bright top-end. Still, it was not as noticeable as with vocal applications.

A modern take on a classic microphone.

Initially, I was unsure how the TLM 203 would perform with drums. Still, after witnessing the performance with other instruments, I knew that the TLM 103 would be up to the challenge. Several critical tests later, I’m confident that I can add the TLM 103 to my arsenal of microphones for drum recordings. While maybe not my go-to, it’s more than capable.

The Neumann TLM 103 is a worthy addition to the Neumann microphone lineup, and for certain applications, it is among the best, especially considering its price point.

Specifications

The specifications highlight some of the Neumann TLM 103’s best features. As expected, it has a standard frequency response of 20Hz-20kHz. The low-end roll-off is smooth, and the elevation at 5kHz does add sparkle, albeit a bit too much, depending on the vocalist.

The Max SPL of 138dB is high, but a few other microphones offer more reach in this area. Having said that, the TLM 103 can comfortably handle loud sources, such as drums or amplified instruments, without distorting or losing clarity. A few extra dB will not make much difference in the vast majority of studio recording applications, making the TLM 103 a reliable choice for a wide range of recording scenarios.

Neumann TLM 103 Specifications.

Very low self noise.

The self-noise of just 7dB is exceptionally low, which highlights its usefulness for voice-over content. There is not a hint of unwanted sound, especially when paired with a compatible shock mount. The signal-to-noise ratio of 87dB is also solid to ensure you capture what you want without background noise.

As this is a professional studio microphone you’ll need access to 48V phantom power and the Neumann TLM 103 has a rated impedance of 50 ohms.

Design

The Neumann 103 offers an attractive and professional appearance, with its sleek design and iconic Neumann logo. There is no denying the weight that the Neumann logo has in giving studios an air of professionalism. While I firmly believe performance is more critical than brand appeal, you’ll certainly never have to face questions regarding the quality of your gear if you have a Neumann microphone in your locker.

The Neumann TLM 103 is available in a silver or all-black finish. Both look fantastic, and the iconic Neumann logo also indicates the direction of the cardioid pattern. The stubby angular grille also catches the eye and gives the microphone a pleasant shape.

Neumann TLM 103 Color Options.

Professional appearance in a choice of two colors.

Beyond aesthetic appeal, the Neumann TLM 103 offers no extra bells and whistles. The dual-layer mesh adequately keeps plosives at bay, but it is not as powerful as a built-in screen found in other microphones.

Likewise, there are no pad options or filters, and the TLM 103 doesn’t offer the option to switch to different polar patterns. While some might prefer more versatility, I appreciate the focused approach, which works well to give the TLM 103 a distinct identity and capacity to fill specific needs in your studio.

Build Quality

If there is one thing you can always count on when buying a Neumann microphone, it is that you can be comfortable knowing that you are purchasing a high-quality microphone built to last.

I have never, and I mean never, come across a Neumann microphone that was poorly made or featured sub-par components or finishing. Neumann has a reputation for quality, and it is well-deserved.

Neumann TLM 103 Details.

Outstanding build quality from a trusted brand.

Everything from the choice of components and the housing to the delicate engineering and design is on point. The TLM 103 is built to last, with high-quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship ensuring its durability and longevity. To put it simply, Neumann microphones are essentially flawless, and the Neumann TLM 103 is no exception. It is an excellent investment that stands the test of time, a rare sight in a world overrun with shoddy products that demand a premium price but don’t back it up with appropriate quality.

Dimensions

The Neumann TLM 103 offers a stubby and compact form factor that makes it easy to incorporate into any studio setting. I’ve had some difficulties in the past with longer microphones that make placement more challenging for certain recording situations, so I like microphones that are a little more compact.

Neumann TLM 103 Dimensions.

The TLM 103 is on the heavier side compared to other mics.

The Neumann TLM 103 is rather hefty. At one lb. (450 grams), it is far from the lightest microphone out there. I like the feeling of heft, but you’ll need a solid stand or boom arm that can handle this weight.

Value

I’ve gone back and forth when considering the Neumann TLM 103’s value proposition. It is a more affordable imitation of the legendary U87, so it’s hard not to like its substantially lower price point. But it also faces some stiff competition at this level. There are many other microphones worth looking into at this price point that might suit your needs better.

If you are looking for more value, the TLM 102 is also worth considering. It offers excellent performance, and in some areas, I prefer its sound profile and capabilities over the TLM 103.

Neumann TLM 103 Accessories.

The included wooden case is superb.

I’ll admit that the included wooden box is excellent. Solid construction and thick foam will keep your microphone safe and sound. The included swivel mount is also high quality—however, the TLM 103 benefits greatly from a shock mount, which requires a separate purchase.

So, while it is an approachable step towards the quality of the U87, it’s also not the most feature-packed option at this price point. If you have your heart set on the TLM 103, you will not be disappointed, but if you are on the fence, I suggest exploring all the options before handing over your hard-earned money.

Customer Reviews

The Neumann TLM 103 is a popular microphone with a long list of positive reviews—ample praise for the build quality and sound profile. Industry experts also look favorably on the TLM 103, giving it high scores, though they also admit it is not perfect.

Tips For Recording Voice Overs

The Neumann TLM 103 is a fantastic microphone for voice-over applications. But to get the most out of recordings, you’ll need to consider more than just the microphone you buy. Below, I cover three key areas that will help you get the best possible voice-over recordings.

Optimize Your Recording Environment

Ensure you have a quiet, acoustically treated space to record in. Utilize soundproofing materials to reduce echo and background noise and a pop filter is also a must-have addition for clean recordings.

Use Proper Microphone Technique

How you use your microphone can significantly affect the quality of your voice-over. Choose a high-quality microphone like the TLM 103 and maintain a consistent distance when recording. Having the microphone slightly off-axis can also help deliver cleaner recordings and minimize plosive sounds.

Warm Up and Practice

Your voice is an instrument that benefits from warm-up exercises and practice. Perform vocal warm-ups to loosen your vocal cords. Humming, lip trills, and tongue twisters can help. Practicing proper breathing can also help you maintain a steady and controlled voice. Finally, familiarize yourself with the script to ensure smooth delivery.

While the above tips only scratched the surface, they will also go a long way in elevating your voice-over recordings. Much like anything, the more practice and research you do, the better the results.

Alternatives

I firmly believe in choosing and assessing multiple options before committing to a product. Below, I look at some other microphones you might want to explore before you commit to picking up the TLM 103.

Our Verdict

I’ve said it before, and I’ll repeat it: you can’t go wrong with a Neumann microphone. There is a reason they are among the most respected brands in the industry, and the Neumann TLM 103 carves out its own niche within the broader Neumann microphone family.

It admirably provides the character of the beloved U87 without the daunting price tag. It might be a little bright for some applications, but it performs exceptionally well across a wide range of studio recording scenarios, and I have no hesitation in reaching for it. It’s found a home in my locker and is among my preferred choices for voice-over applications.

Some extra bells and whistles would have been nice, and buying a shock mount separately minimizes its value proposition. However, when it comes to pure recording capabilities, the Neumann TLM 103 is among the best.
