As a large condenser microphone with a cardioid pattern, we started with various vocal tests. The TLM 103 offered excellent voice-over recording capabilities in a well-treated studio space. The profile is natural and authentic but not hyper-accurate. For our tastes, the TLM 103 adds just enough character and warmth to give it an excellent presence.
A versatile studio microphone.
Moving onto vocals highlighted one of our only minor gripes with the microphone. It can be bright with certain vocal styles. More nasally vocals are slightly fatiguing and will require more post-processing work than some might want. But this is heavily dependent on the vocalist. For deeper voices, it’s a solid workhorse.

The Max SPL of 138dB is high, but a few other microphones offer more reach in this area. Having said that, the TLM 103 can comfortably handle loud sources, such as drums or amplified instruments, without distorting or losing clarity. A few extra dB will not make much difference in the vast majority of studio recording applications, making the TLM 103 a reliable choice for a wide range of recording scenarios.

The self-noise of just 7dB is exceptionally low, which highlights its usefulness for voice-over content. There is not a hint of unwanted sound, especially when paired with a compatible shock mount. The signal-to-noise ratio of 87dB is also solid to ensure you capture what you want without background noise.

The Neumann TLM 103 is available in a silver or all-black finish. Both look fantastic, and the iconic Neumann logo also indicates the direction of the cardioid pattern. The stubby angular grille also catches the eye and gives the microphone a pleasant shape.

While some might prefer more versatility, I appreciate the focused approach, which works well to give the TLM 103 a distinct identity and capacity to fill specific needs in your studio.
