Traveling with studio monitors just got a whole lot easier with the release of a new series of studio monitors from the legendary KRK.
The KRK GOAUX4 delivers fantastic sound quality while retaining a small footprint and offering a convenient carry case for travel. It has rapidly become the leading choice for creators on the go.
With over 15 years of experience in the industry, we have seen a rapid increase in touring as a primary source of income for creators. However, this often results in a more difficult creative process while on the road.
We tackled this review with this consideration at the forefront of our detailed testing. But we also reached out to our network of artists to see what they thought while using these monitors on the road, delivering a comprehensive look into this interesting new line of studio monitors.

We have already reviewed the smaller sibling, the GOAUX3, but there are some notable differences in the slightly larger GOAUX4 set. Below, we take a deep dive into the differences and what the GOAUX4 has to offer.
Sound Quality
For a small set of portable studio monitors, the GOAUX4 packs a sizable punch—more so than many other 4-inch studio monitors I’ve tested previously.
The low-end offers that signature KRK sound. Slightly enhanced and not as flat as some might desire, but with a bit of tuning, these can provide accurate monitoring in a compact form factor.
The mid-range was smooth and deliberate, with excellent tonality. The transition from lows to mids was clean and offered a pleasing listening and monitoring experience.
KRK studio monitors that you can take on the road.
The top end isn’t overly bright while retaining ample accuracy and definition. Looking at the full range holistically, these are far better than I expected at this price point.
The projection was also much better than I initially anticipated. These are still near-field monitors, but in small spaces, they deliver enough volume to satisfy.
Are these the most accurate 4-inch monitors I’ve tested? No, they are not, but they are also the most travel-friendly option on the market and accurate enough to allow you to hash out ideas on the road before making definitive tweaks back in a dedicated studio setting.
KRK set out to provide a convenient and travel-friendly monitoring solution, and they have delivered. I’ll reach for these whenever I hit the road for editing duties when away from my core studio space.
Build Quality
KRK has an excellent reputation for designing and developing long-lasting products, and the KRK GOAUX4 continues this long tradition. It is a solid and dependable set of compact monitors that can handle the rigors of frequent use and travel.
The ultra-tough ABS enclosure is an ideal choice. The coating is scuff-resistant and can handle minor knocks. This will likely not be a problem, considering the excellent case included in the box.
Ultra tough construction.
The iconic yellow woofers feature a glass aramid composition, and the 1-inch soft textile dome complements it well. The protective grilles, which add to the industrious nature of these monitors, provide additional security and protection for the drivers.
The high quality extends to the included stands, connection points, and buttons. Compact, solid, and dependable, it is another excellent addition to KRK’s line of studio monitors.
Specifications
KRK has opted for a bi-amplified design to help drive these little monitors. The total power output is 100 Watts, with 50 Watts per driver. This is a noticeable increase from the 60 Watts of total power available on the smaller KRK GOAUX3.
The increased power level results in a slightly higher Max SPL of 108dB compared to the 105dB offered on the 3-inch model. It might not seem like much, and in practice, it isn’t, but the added oomph helped deliver smoother performance when operating at higher volume levels.
Surprisingly loud considering their small size.
The frequency range is 55Hz-22kHz (-10dB) with a response of 60Hz-20kHz (-3dB). Once again, this is a slight yet noticeable improvement in both range and response over the smaller GOAUX3.
The KRK GOAUX4 also maintains consistent output with minimal distortion. If you push these aggressively, there are noticeable dips in performance, but that is the case across most 4-inch studio monitors.
Tuning Options
The KRK GOAUX4 features controls similar to the GOAUX3, with a few extra bells and whistles that help differentiate it and give you further control.
Like its smaller sibling, it features a Low-Frequency and High-Frequency EQ. You can boost the lows by 2dB or reduce the output by 3 dB. This is handy if you are in a tight space and the rear-facing ports are causing you sound issues. The same dB settings are available for the top end.
Simple and effective tuning controls.
The main upgrade from the 3-inch model is the inclusion of a dedicated microphone with Auto ARC functionality. If you travel often, you’ll encounter a wide variety of spaces. Access to a quick and easy way to correct output to different spaces is a time saver.
However, one issue goes against the GOAUX4’s time-saving mentality. The unit doesn’t retain settings between sessions, so once you power down, you’ll need to set your settings again when you return for your next session. It’s not a huge gripe, but it’s still worth mentioning.
Design
The KRK GOAUX4 stays within what you would expect from a KRK monitor. The iconic yellow woofer is undeniable and gives these compact studio monitors ample character.
The enclosure’s curvature adds to its appeal, and the finish is superb. It is attractive, functional, and professional in appearance.
The stands offer multiple angles.
There are also multiple other design considerations, such as forward-facing volume controls and connections for headphones and a microphone.
The volume control is an endless encoder. It does take quite a few rotations to get to the maximum volume. I would have preferred a set range, but once again, this is a minor quibble.
The included stands are superb, with three height settings. They are perfect for directing sound to your ears no matter where you set them up. The case’s design is also ideal, with a firm, secure fit for the speakers and cables.
Dimensions
Thanks to its compact size and included carry case, the KRK GOAUX4 is an ideal choice for travel. While space-saving is limited when dealing with a 4-inch cone, KRK has done an excellent job keeping these as compact as possible.
Compact studio monitors.
As you would expect, this set of monitors is heavier than the smaller GOAUX3, with a total weight of 9.48 lbs. (4.3 kg). It is three pounds (one kilo) heavier when you factor in the monitors, stands, bag, and cables. But even with this slightly increased weight, they are still exceptionally portable.
Inputs
The KRK GOAUX4 also improves in this area. Unlike its smaller offering, it features a balanced connection option with dedicated Left and Right TRS connection points.
Balanced and unbalanced connection options.
The GOAUX4 also features unbalanced RCA connection options, an AUX-In, and Bluetooth connectivity, just like the GOAUX3—maximum flexibility to connect to various devices. Bluetooth pairing was quick and easy, with no dropouts.
The GOAUX4 also features a USB audio input, but the lack of a low-latency Windows audio driver limits its usefulness. I’d stick to the dedicated RCA or TRS connection points.
Value
There is a lot to like about the value proposition of the KRK GOAUX4. While you can find cheaper 4-inch monitor pairs, the GOAUX4 is a unique offering thanks to the included stands and the carry case.
Superb travel case.
When you also factor in the high sound quality, excellent build quality, and flexibility that these offer, there isn’t much to complain about. They are a worthwhile investment if you need to take studio monitors on the road.
Customer Reviews
The reviews have been rolling in, and for the most part, both industry experts and customers rate the KRK GOAUX4 favorably. Many highlight the high portability and impressive sound quality as standout features. However, some reiterate some of the minor gripes we have highlighted in this review.
The KRK Legacy
KRK has a long and illustrious history. Keith R Klawitter founded the company in 1986, and it has become one of the most popular and recognizable brands in the market.
Driving this growth is a reputation for rock-solid build quality and a sound profile that resonates with artists. Put simply, KRK monitors sound great in a variety of settings. This unique sound profile made it a popular choice for up-and-coming artists, and the iconic yellow woofers adorn home studios to this day.
KRK studio monitors are a staple of the music industry.
The hard-hitting sound also makes it a favorite for electronic music producers. With the release of new generation models and unique offerings like the GOAUX series, the company continues to evolve while staying true to the fundamentals that made it popular to begin with.
I’m as far removed from a brand loyalist as you’ll find, but there is no denying the impact and quality that KRK brings to the table. It is a legendary company that continues to go from strength to strength.
Alternatives
If you want to buy studio monitors, there are a staggering number of options available, many of which might better suit your needs than the GOAUX4. Below, we take a quick look at some alternatives worth considering.
Yamaha HS3
If you do not intend on taking your monitors on the road, the Yamaha HS3 is an excellent option. It offers premium-quality sound from one of the world’s leading music gear brands.
- Highly detailed and neutral sound that is ideal for studio work.
- Excellent build quality from a trusted brand.
- Doesn’t include stands or a travel bag.
Pioneer DJ VM-70
While compact monitors are great for travel and small studios, they lack the oomph some may want. Investing in larger monitors like the Pioneer DJ VM-70 will be the better option if you have the space and the budget.
- Loud and bombastic output that is great for home DJ studios.
- DSP controls to sculpt the sound. Ideal for serious studio work.
- Substantially larger compared to the 4-inch GOAUX4.

The PreSonus Eris Studio 4 is another attractively priced studio monitor that offers premium sound at a low price. The forward-facing port is also a much better choice for smaller studio spaces.
- Clean and reliable sound for studio applications.
- Flexible tuning controls and multiple connection options.
- Doesn’t feature Bluetooth connectivity.
Our Verdict
The KRK GOAUX4 is an appealing addition to the KRK studio monitor lineup. After countless hours of testing and gathering feedback, the consensus is that this is a solid and well-priced set of monitors for travel.
I’ll admit there are some minor gripes holding it back from perfection, and the sound profile might not be accurate enough for some, but overall, these are fantastic.
They have premium build quality, excellent sound that is engaging and fun, and are ultra portable. The stands and bag add to the value offering and make these an outstanding choice for artists who are constantly on the move.
